Language provision

One vital aspect of the project is to support refugee teachers in developing their communication and language skills to the required level and to achieve the relevant certificates.

For entry to employment based teacher training routes, GCSE English at grade C or above or equivalent is required. Both Newman College and the WLP have assessment tests which check if potential candidates are at the required level; please contact us if you would like to arrange to sit these tests.

Both partners provide a range of programmes, depending on individual needs.

In London, the West London Partnership is working with Middlesex University to provide a communication skills course for refugee teachers. The course is aimed at improving written and verbal English skills so that candidates have the required level of English for entering routes to gain QTS. Each participant has an individual needs assessment and will undertake a five module programme covering written communication, oral communication, and non-verbal communication (including presentation skills), reading and comprehension skills.

In the West Midlands area, Newman College is working closely with The College of International Citizenship within Matthew Boulton College in Birmingham which is a key support in providing additional training in ESOL and identifying further training opportunities.

Other provision

Potential candidates situated outside of these areas are signposted to appropriate local provision, e.g. ESOL and other relevant departments of local colleges of further education. For a list of FE colleges, please see below:

Barnet College runs a specialist programme ESOL for Overseas Trained Teachers. This is a one year course starting in September which runs until June/July. It is a 16 hour course.

Students are prepared for the Skills for Life qualifications at Level 1 and 2 and also IELTS (International English Language Teaching System).

The students study one specific module called the History of Education which includes 4 assignments. These assignments involve lesson planning, reflective writing and practical teaching assessments. In addition to this, students study a general English module and an academic English module.

Employment after the course is the main objective, as well as to achieve exam success, especially with IELTS, and to gain practical working experience through a work placement fortnight and voluntary work as classroom assistants within Barnet College and local schools.
