Overseas teacher training system

Refugees follow a range of different teacher training systems in their home countries.

UK NARIC has produced several useful reference guides on Teacher Training systems in 10 refugee producing countries. These include background history, information on teacher training and general equivalency of qualifications.

 These guides are for information, advice and guidance (IAG) providers, education institutions, Initial Teacher Training Providers, the General Teaching Council and interested individuals.

Each guide has several uses:

• To give further information on countries where the teacher training system may not be familiar
• To assist in making personalised and informed assessments of refugee teachers’ qualifications in order to identify the most appropriate pathways to Qualified Teacher Status
• To assist, where appropriate, with any process of AP(E)L (Accreditation of Prior (Experience and) Learning).
• To give schools a short introduction to recent history in the top ten refugee producing countries of people in the UK (2007), which can form part of PSHE classes
