The conference was hosted by the Greater London Authority, and took place at City Hall. It was well attended, with over 70 people from a variety of backgrounds, including teachers, local authorities and voluntary sector providers.
The aim of the conference was to encourage dialogue between those responsible for selection and recruitment decisions and those seeking to become fully qualified teachers. It explored issues surrounding diversity in the school workforce and links to individual pupil achievement as well as drawing on lessons learnt from employing refugees in the National Health Service. Speakers included Mike Watkins, assistant Director of Initial Teacher Training at the Training and Development Agency for schools (TDA) and Donna Covey, Refugee Council Chief Executive.
The afternoon saw a series of workshops, focusing on Barriers to Re-qualification and Re-employment, Recognition of Qualifications and Surrounding Issues, Bilingual and Other Teaching Assistants and Developing Employability Skills. It also saw the launch of UK NARIC’s reports on teacher training in the top ten refugee producing countries, which will serve as a useful reference guide for employers and voluntary sector workers alike.
