Refugee Teachers Network National Conference 2009

The Refugee Teachers Network national conference took place in Manchester on 20 March 2009.

The conference was held in the Crowne Plaza hotel, and was attended by 70 delegates. In attendance were 26 refugee teachers from the North West of England , eight refugee teachers from Yorkshire and Humberside and one teacher from Newcastle.

35 representatives from organisations attended, from the following parts of the UK:

  • Manchester
  • Bolton
  • Rochdale
  • Liverpool
  • Glasgow
  • Wolverhampton
  • Birmingham
  • Gateshead
  • London
  • Sheffield
  • Leeds
  • Nottingham

Eddie Ralston, the Refugee Teachers Network coordinator, opened the conference, explaining the purpose and rationale. He went on to set the context for the day, giving a presentation on how the Refugee Teachers Network (RTN) had expanded during the last 12 months.

This was followed by further presentations from 2 overseas-trained ‘refugee teachers’ who have been supported by the Refugee Teachers Network, and from Beryl Randall, Director of Employability Forum who described the ‘Opening Doors for Refugee Teachers’ project.

Delegates were then given a choice of 4 workshops to attend before lunch.

After lunch there were 3 more presentations from representatives from organisations based in different parts of the UK, before delegates were then invited to choose an afternoon workshop.

Finally, a panel of representatives from the Refugee Teachers Task Force listened to questions and recommendations from the conference attendees.
