Aims of the project

Find out why the Refugees into Teaching project has been set up and what we aim to do.

Refugees into Teaching will support refugee teachers to return to teaching in England, and give those with an interest in teaching more information and guidance. The final aim is to get teachers qualified up to QTS, mainly through employment based teacher training routes, particularly in Training and Development Agency for School's priority subjects. The priority subjects for 2006/07 are:

  • Mathematics
  • Science (including Applied Science)
  • Modern Languages
  • ICT (including Applied ICT)
  • Music
  • Religious Education
  • Design and Technology

The project will support teachers at all stages, from having their qualifications assessed by UK NARIC, helping with ESOL needs and finding short term work placements, to accessing employment based training and working with a school to gain QTS. The project is specifically working in partnership with teacher training providers in the West London and West Midlands area.

On a national level, the aim of the project is to identify and map the distribution and profile of refugee teachers across England and Wales. These statistics will feed into a national policy framework for refugee employment. This will be done by setting up a national voluntary database for refugee teachers.
