About us

The Refugees into Teaching project aims to help refugee teachers overcome barriers to employment. It will support refugee teachers to return to teaching in England, and give those with an interest in teaching more information and guidance.

The project works on a national level, and also aims to identify and map the distribution and profile of refugee teachers across England and Wales. These statistics will feed into a national policy framework for refugee employment. The project set up the refugee teachers database to achieve this, and the database now has several hundred teachers around the country registered.

The project offers the following services:

  • Advice on routes into teaching – Information on the different training routes available and what qualifications are needed, how to gain QTS, and any other questions you may have. You can telephone, or come to one of our regular drop-in sessions.

  • Information – On registration, you can sign up for a regular newsletter and an e-group, which will provide you with ongoing information for teachers, including meetings, conferences, training and news.

  • Qualification assessment – If you have not had your qualifications looked at by UK NARIC, we can find out the equivalence free of charge.
  • Specialist guidance – We have two specialist Information, Advice and Guidance workers in London and Leeds.
  • Mentoring - This scheme will match refugee teachers with someone currently teaching in the English schooling system who can offer you one-to-one advice and support.
