The Refugee Teachers Database

Primary school teacherAs part of the project’s wider policy role, the Refugee Council has been asked to set up a national voluntary database of refugee teachers in England and Wales. There are potentially large numbers of refugee teachers, but many have found it difficult to find out information on continuing their career once in the UK. At present there is no central place where information on refugee teachers is held. We need to know how many teachers there are, where they are living, how far they have got in resuming their career and how we can further help them. This will show a more accurate picture of the number of refugee teachers and their training needs.

Who is the database for?
The database is for refugees who were teachers in their home country or have an interest in teaching in the UK.

What does the database offer?
The project will use the database to give more specialist advice and referral to people, and also to send out a regular newsletter and emails containing useful information related to the project and to teaching in England and Wales.

It will also provide the project with statistics, and these will help organisations to make sure they are giving the right service to help refugee teachers get back to work.

The project also hopes to use the information for research purposes, with your agreement, and for possible campaigning on refugee employment issues. The database will demonstrate that refugee teachers can make a positive contribution in schools, but that they also face distinctive barriers.

What information is stored on the database?
When you register, you will be asked to fill out a form. This contains your personal details, including information on your qualifications and work experience, your level of English language and any comments you have.

Your details will be stored securely and available to partners. We will ask your permission before forwarding your information to organisations other than the partners. All personal meetings will also be confidential.
